Make a Lightweight Dummy with Duct Tape

This method creates a lightweight, life-sized dummy that is perfect for Halloween displays, props, costumes, or haunted attractions. It's inexpensive, surprisingly durable, and can be customized with a simple PVC skeleton if you want it to stand or pose.

 

Materials

• Plastic wrap (cling wrap)
• Duct tape (2–4 rolls depending on size)
• Packing peanuts
• Polyfil (polyester stuffing)
• Mannequin (or dress form)
• PVC pipe and fittings (optional)
• Utility knife or scissors
• Extra duct tape for assembly

 

Step 1: Wrap the Mannequin

Work on one body section at a time (head, torso, arms, legs, etc.).

Wrap the mannequin with several layers of plastic wrap. Make sure the plastic is snug against the surface without wrinkles. The plastic wrap acts as a barrier so the duct tape shell can be removed easily.

Tip: Wrapping one section at a time makes removal much easier and helps maintain the shape.

 

Step 2: Apply the Duct Tape

Cover the plastic-wrapped section with several overlapping layers of duct tape.

Use enough tape so the shell is rigid and can hold its shape once removed. Three to four layers is usually sufficient.

Take your time smoothing the tape as you work to minimize wrinkles and create a cleaner finished surface.

 

Step 3: Remove the Shell

Using a utility knife or scissors, carefully cut along an inconspicuous seam (such as the inside of an arm or the back of the torso).

Remove the shell from the mannequin, then tape the cut seam back together from both the inside and outside until it is completely sealed.

Repeat this process for every body section until all of the pieces have been created.

Step 4: Assemble the Body

Once all of the individual sections are complete, tape them back together to recreate the full body.

Reinforce all joints with additional duct tape on both the inside and outside for added strength.

At this point, your dummy should resemble a hollow shell.

(This example was used for a game where you reach inside to grab a token. Very disgusting but awesome!)

 

Step 5: (Optional) Install a PVC Skeleton

If you'd like your dummy to stand, sit, or hold specific poses, build a simple skeleton from PVC pipe before adding the stuffing.

A basic frame can include:

• Spine
• Shoulders
• Arms
• Hips
• Legs

Secure the PVC inside the shell with duct tape so it remains centered.

This step is optional but greatly improves durability and poseability.

 

Step 6: Fill the Dummy

Begin filling the body with packing peanuts.

Packing peanuts keep the dummy extremely lightweight while providing enough support to maintain its shape.

Continue adding peanuts until each section feels firm but not overstuffed.

 

Step 7: Add Polyfil for Realism

Use Polyfil anywhere additional shaping is needed.

It's especially useful for:

• Head and face
• Neck
• Shoulders
• Hands
• Areas where packing peanuts leave visible gaps

The Polyfil softens contours and creates a much more natural appearance.

 

 

Step 8: Seal and Finish

Tape any remaining openings closed.

Your dummy is now ready to dress in clothing, add masks or props, or use as the base for Halloween characters.

Because the body is mostly filled with packing peanuts, it's lightweight enough to hang, prop against walls, sit in chairs, or move around your display with ease.

 

 

Tips

• Build the dummy in separate sections for easier handling and more accurate shapes.
• Reinforce joints with extra duct tape if the dummy will be moved frequently.
• Use more Polyfil in visible areas and packing peanuts everywhere else to keep weight and cost down.
• If using a PVC skeleton, leave a section of pipe extending through one foot so it can slide into a stand or mounting base.
• Dress the dummy in loose clothing to hide seams and create a more realistic finished appearance.
